I just received word that actor James Doohan -- famed for playing Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott on the cult classic TV series Star Trek -- has died at the age of 85. Doohan was such an American icon. The character of "Scotty" was so thoroughly American in his "can do" attitude. There was nothing Scotty couldn't do in the engineering section of any starship. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Doohan once and found him to be an absolute gentleman and a very amiable man. He will be missed, and not just by the myriad of Star Trek fans throughout the world.
